Content production: The miggle team get snap happy
29th May, 2009 by Jo

A client of ours asked us if we could produce the product photos for her miggle designed and developed ecommerce site, due to launch in July. What does she sell? Tiny, shiny body jewellery – the sort that smudges if you look too hard – and lots of it. A fiddly job if ever I’ve come across one.
Ever willing to rise to a challenge, I dredged up what remained of my studio memories from back when I studied Editorial Photography here in Brighton many moons ago. With various members of the team drafted into polishing and blu-tak duty we set up quite a functional little studio in a corner of the office with a lovely pink backdrop to match her site design and give the body jewellery some ‘zing’. After plenty of experimentation, we’re pretty chuffed with the results. What do you reckon?

The photos are okay, maybe if the pink were a few tones lighter. The back drop cold have been more diffused this would have taken the shadow around the items away. What Camera/settings and what type of lighting directional or other did you use?

Hi Dape,
Thanks for your comment…
The pink backdrop (almost) exactly matches the pink branding of the site itself – any lighter and we think it would have looked wishy washy within the design, which also features a fairly punchy turquoise.
Not sure what you mean by ‘the backdrop could have been more diffused’ – sure, the lighting could have been more diffused. We experimented with diffusing our two fairly standard desk lamps, but the naked bulbs produced a much better sparkle in the jewellery – we felt that we could live with the shadows.
Camera was a fairly standard Canon digital SLR – can’t remember model off the top of my head.
Best,
Jo
