The NHS Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group is led and run by local health professionals. They aim to make sure people living in the area have access to the medical services they need as well as commissioning healthcare services. miggle was called in to create a new site for the CCG that would replace the outgoing PCT (Primary Care Trust).
This public facing site serves two main purposes.
1. It acts as a public facing site for the residents of Brighton and Hove, providing details on how health care services are managed and provisioned in the city. It also provides links to statutory information, like papers and minutes on local CCG public board meetings.
2. It links, via an API, with the Find Your Nearest and Medical Conditions services on NHS Choices, with all local services and information on conditions indexed in the site's search. From a services perspective this enables residents to get not just information of local NHS Choices held info via the local site, but also details of local health based services which aren't held on NHS Choices.
We have also used the content on the site to repurpose it as a mobile-optimised service for out of hours GPs to use to quickly and easily make referrals to out of hours facilities to to follow certain medical pathways based on conditions.
The Extranet is used by medical staff (i.e. Doctors, Nurses, Consultants and Surgeons) and NHS business and admin staff. It holds details on all local NHS staff, processes and procedures, relevant news and information and links to various resources.
This site was recently relaunched as part of a design refresh and extensive content audit the local CCG have undertaken. The fact that it can be done as part of the existing solution shows how flexible that solution is.
Why Drupal was chosen
The existing local extranet that we used as our starting point was already built in Drupal. Drupal is apt for an organisation such as the NHS in that it is open source and community-led. The ease with which workflows, roles and permissions can be customised makes it ideal for the various health professionals and business staff running and editing the site to manage content.
Project goals, requirements, outcome
When miggle first got involved in this project the site was simply an extranet. It had just undergone an audit, and our initial task was to carry out the required improvements highlighted by the audit in order to make the site more user-friendly. The client then initiated a second phase - a public facing site - accompanied by a complete change of design and layout to achieve better usability for both GPs and the local people requiring the important information on offer.
The updated site is easy to navigate and serves to provide essential medical advice, like nearest services, latest news, information on conditions (pulled in from NHS Choices) as well as certain required statutory information.
We have a vanilla demo version of this site which can be used as a starting point for other CCGs.
